Headshots do a lot of work. They appear on LinkedIn profiles, company websites, speaker bios, and real estate marketing, often before anyone meets the person in them. Steven Saccio Photography offers on-location headshot sessions in Tallahassee for individuals and teams who want a portrait that looks like them, taken somewhere that feels like them.

Why shoot on location

A studio backdrop is clean but neutral. Photographing someone at the office, outdoors, or at a place they know adds context and personality, and it tends to put people at ease. For teams, an on-location session can happen at the workplace, which makes it easier to photograph everyone in one visit.

Working with natural light

Good headshots come down to light, and on location that means working with whatever the day provides.

  • Golden hour. Sessions near sunrise or before sunset have soft, warm light that flatters nearly everyone.
  • Diffusers and reflectors. Harsh midday sun can be softened with a diffuser and bounced back onto the face with a reflector, which keeps the light even and avoids hard shadows.
  • Open shade. When the sun is high, Steven looks for natural shade that gives smooth, even light.
  • Camera settings. Exposure is adjusted for each setup so the face is properly exposed in any lighting.

When natural light is not enough

Natural light is beautiful, but the weather does not always cooperate. Adding controlled artificial light means a session does not depend on the forecast.

  • Portable flash. Speedlights, strobes, or other portable flash units add controlled light that balances shadows and highlights.
  • Softboxes and modifiers. These shape artificial light so it resembles soft natural light and keeps the portrait looking natural.
  • Blending the two. Mixing artificial and natural light allows for either a dramatic, high-contrast look or soft, even lighting, depending on what the client wants.
  • Reflectors. A reflector bounces light back onto the subject and fills in shadows.
